Divide the class into small groups. Each group should choose and complete one of the following projects. Ask students to:
- Write a script for a personal interview, or documentary piece, about a person or group associated with Lewis & Clark’s Corps of Discovery. They should use a news program format for the script, act out or record an interview. Students should include appropriate pictures, maps, charts, graphs, or artifacts.
- Write a song using a tune of their own or by selecting one that already exists. The song should describe the role of the group or individuals in the expedition of Lewis and Clark and include information from research and include at least three verses and a chorus. Encourage students to perform their song live or record an audio or video version of it for the class. For authenticity, student should use appropriate props, costumes, or artifacts in the presentation of the song.
- Choose an event involving an individual or group associated with Lewis and Clark’s Corps of Discovery. Student should then write a script that details stage directions and dialogue about this event and person or group. Students can perform this scene for the class live, or record it. Students should use costumes and props that add authenticity to the scene. After the presentation, ask student why they chose this event for their presentation and to describe the other ways the person or group was important to the expedition.
- Create a museum exhibit about a person or group associated with Lewis and Clark’s Corps of Discovery. Students should include pictures, written information, artifacts, and maps of importance to this group. Students can create an audio narration or presentation that can run as part of the exhibit.
- Create a presentation that describes a person or group associated with Lewis and Clark’s Corps of Discovery. Students should include imported pictures, sounds, graphics, and maps whenever possible to help convey what they have learned. Encourage students to use this presentation to talk to the group about their research. Each person in the group should present at least two slides of information.
- You can also encourage your students to develop their own ideas to present what they have learned about Lewis and Clark’s Corps of Discovery to the rest of the class. Remind them to obtain approval before beginning a new approach.
